Viking Helmets and New Ideas
This spring Sanctuary had the fabulous opportunity to explore deeper practicalities behind academic assumptions. Our armourer, Scott Nichols, was invited to interpret the renowned Gjermundbu spectacle helmet. Being the reflective armourer that he is, he began to wonder at elements of the construction for the original material evidence, and how it was built in the 10th century. While Scott’s passion is full medieval harness, the aspects of the helmet and the scholarly assumptions made about it puzzled him, and thus began a journey involving scholars of the Viking Age, zoom calls to Norway, and a great many very excited academics!
Stay tuned to see where creativity, passion, and historical inquiry will take us now!
